Removal and finishing
Popcorn Ceiling Removal: What Rob Checks First
Every popcorn ceiling is a bit different. Rob checks the size of the room, whether the texture has been painted, what shape the ceiling is in and what finish you want after, then gives you a written price.
Once the texture is off, the ceiling may need a skim coat, primer, paint or a mix of those. That goes in the quote.
Popcorn Ceiling Work Available
Texture Removal
We scrape off the popcorn texture. Older homes need asbestos testing first.
Painted Popcorn Ceilings
Previously painted popcorn texture can take more effort to remove and is quoted after Rob sees the ceiling.
Skim Coat and Finishing
The finish after removal depends on what you want. Skim coating and other finishing work can be included in the written estimate.
Priming and Painting
We can prime and paint the ceiling after, if you want.
Covering With Drywall
When removal is not appropriate, Hunt can install new drywall over a popcorn ceiling. If the ceiling has tested positive for asbestos, this is only done once a qualified asbestos professional confirms it's appropriate.
What Affects the Estimate?
- Size and number of rooms
- Whether the popcorn texture has previously been painted
- Ceiling condition after the texture is removed
- The finish you want afterward
- Furniture and room-preparation requirements
- Whether an older home needs asbestos testing before work begins
Older homes need testing before work begins
Older popcorn ceilings may contain asbestos. Hunt Contracting does not perform asbestos testing or asbestos abatement and will not proceed with removal in an older home until testing has been completed separately. If asbestos is present, removal becomes a much more involved safety project, and in most cases Rob suggests leaving the ceiling alone unless there is a real problem with it. Covering the existing ceiling with new drywall is an option Hunt can provide, but only once a qualified asbestos professional confirms it's appropriate.
Room Preparation and Dust
Please move furniture out of the room before we start. Anything that can't be moved gets covered with plastic. Popcorn removal is messy and we can't promise zero dust, so it's best to clear the room first.
How Popcorn Ceiling Removal Is Priced
There's no flat price for popcorn removal. Room size, painted texture, the ceiling's condition, the finish you want and testing all change the work. Rob prices it after seeing the ceiling, and you get the price in writing before you decide.
